Photography & Figurative Carving
Art keeps knocking on the door of our hearts until we let it out. Once out, the measure of time evaporates; and I am left in the moment with my “companion” looking back at me–the ever-changing sunrise, a path in a forest, the rush of a waterfalls, waves lapping the shore, or the wonders of a blooming flower. More recently, I find myself out in the dark of night chasing the northern lights.
My journey into photography began with an intro to photography course in 1999, and participation in workshops for the past 25 years. In addition, I was a design specialist in the Photo Development department at Lifetouch Portrait Studios corporate office. As an expectation of the department’s culture I became a member of the Professional Photographers Association (2007-2022). By attending workshops, educational seminars, entering print competitions and earning photographic print merits, I achieved Master Photographer status in 2014. The prints judged as merit worthy were included in PPA’s annual photo exhibit at the Imaging USA conventions. A select few were printed in the annual Loan Collection book.
For me, the making of an image begins with recording moments that capture my attention. The shutter is clicked, the moment is preserved. Using computer software, I might adjust the tonal range, add a texture effect or manipulate the pixels for a painterly look. The end result is often a serendipitous stroke of the “pen” and the image is ready for print. When choosing an image for print, I look for The 12 Elements of a Merit Image–IMPACT, TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE, CREATIVITY, STYLE, COMPOSITION,PRESENTATION, COLOR BALANCE, CENTER OF INTEREST, LIGHTING, SUBJECT MATTER, TECHNIQUE, AND STORY TELLING.
When you take the opportunity to view my prints, may a bridge between me as the artist and that of you, the spectator, leave you with a memory to ponder.
Amongst the trees, along a path perspectives may be challenged Looking skyward, clouds by day, stars by night you see beyond the shadows The sound of rushing water pulls you forward to hear a many points of view Slip outside of yourself to view this life with hope and possibilities.
